At home whenever I would do something like build a shelf or do something that needed strength I used to call myself a pioneer woman. I thought that it was good to be independent and not need anyone else for help, especially a man. I wanted to be able to take care of myself and I thought that this is how we are supposed to live. God has been showing me that this is not his plan for us.

Today my team and I cleared the land for a new church to be built on. We used machetes and cleared the land of any trees and weeds. It was hard work in the blazing African sun. As I looked around the land when we were finished I realized that we were able to get the work done quicker because we were all working on it together. Work is easier and more fun with others there for help. Independence is not of God, he wants us to need each other.

God did not call us to live a life of solitude but a life in community with others. Jesus lived his life with 12 friends that he shared everything with. He shared his meals with people of all different walks of life. He has been teaching me many things by living in community with my team. Oh and by the way I am now on an all girls’ team. We had a team change at the end of last month

This month we are working with a church pastor and helping with her ministry. We have been doing house visits, hospital visits, church services, reaching out to the orphans in the town and working on this land for the new church. Rosemary our contact is a widow who has raised 7 children and is currently raising her 15 year old granddaughter. She became a pastor after her husband’s death 20 years ago. She lives in Kenya but her ministry is in Uganda. We are living with her friend Sarah who is also a widow and her 5 children in Busia Uganda.

This is Rebecca and her children Angel and Precious, I met them when we were visiting at the hospital.  Angel was born 2 months premature and her mother died in childbirth.  Her mother was Rebecca’s sister so she is adopting her.
