You may be wondering, “Mykayla, what did you even do in Nepal?”. As you may or may not know, in 2017 the Nepal government made Christian evangelism illegal. This means that during my month in Nepal, I was a “tourist or student” as far as the government and strangers were concerned. It also means that for all the Christians living in Nepal, it is now illegal for them to live out the Great Commission “to go and make disciples”(Matthew 28:19).
I was not allowed to speak about Jesus, unless someone else started the conversation. I was not allowed to post anything on social media about Jesus, faith, Christianity, prayer or a mission trip. We risked deportation.
In reality, my time in Nepal was wonderful. It was full of encouragement of my faith. Though much of our ministry was prayer walking through the heavy spirituality of Buddhist or Hindu temples, we were also able to encourage and serve along Christian ministries in the country.
I visited a leper colony, rehabilitation center, orphanage and home church. All of these are led by Christians who have BOLD faith! Their stories and convictions are incredible testimonies to the sovereignty of God. They continuously step out in faith doing the ministry that God placed on their hearts, though they risk imprisonment.
As we ministered at these places with short sermons and worship, the people ministered to us with their brave faith!
We also had the privilege of going to church one Sunday and I was pleasantly surprised to know that about 1,000 people are in attendance!
On top of all these wonderful ministries we visited, our ministry host himself was a walking risk of imprisonment himself. He takes so many missionaries into his house and organizes their ministry for their time in the country. He is incredibly active in ministry, so full of love for the Lord and his heart aches for his lost country.
God is working in Nepal! He is not limited by laws of men. Honestly, I think He thrives in places where people don’t want Him to be. Please pray for the country, that God would continue to be shared with boldness and that people would fall away from their works-based worship of idols and jump into the free gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. Pray for safety and strength for those risking their lives daily as they illegally share the gospel.
