Worthy is the king who conquered the grave.
Ayiti: the place that captured my heart shortly after my high school graduation. The place where the Lord challenges me and shapes me in ways I didn’t know I needed. The place where I met lifelong friends who love the Lord.
When I went to Haiti shortly after my high school graduation, little did I know that I would long to return again and again.
As we were preparing to leave, many people asked whether or not we were still going based on the recent news reports coming from Haiti. If you haven’t heard about what happened in Haiti earlier this month, I would love to talk!
So why go when it might not be the “safest” situation? Three reasons:
Reason #1:
We were in constant communication with Nehemiah Vision Ministries (NVM); we trusted their judgment because they were on the ground in Haiti, they were there, they saw what was going on. We were also following along with what multiple other organizations were doing and tracking whether or not they were sending teams. We tracked the riots and Port-au-Prince was back to normal long before we left the States. We were also in communication with Haitians we had traveled with before so that we could get their input as to what was happening.
Reason #2:
There are times Stateside when it is just as unsafe (if not more) to travel somewhere than it was in Haiti. We weren’t going to make any rash decisions, we wanted to use our resources well.
Reason #3:
As Christ followers, when we stand before the Lord, do we want to stand before Him one day and say, “I was too scared to live for you and to travel for you.” We serve a strong and mighty God and the question we need to ask ourselves is whether or not we will go anywhere and do anything for Him. We need to be willing to trust Him and trust that He is leading us into situations that He will equip us in.
This week, we taught for three days at English camp. We shared with the students that they do not have to be afraid because God is in control. How can we begin to try to teach them that, if we aren’t wiling to live it ourselves.
Before leaving for Haiti, I was singing This is Amazing Grace in church and was struck by the line: worthy is the King Who conquered the grave. If we truly believe that Jesus is worthy because he conquered sin and death, then we have no reason not to go anywhere and do anything for Him.
