Welcome to the World Race, where you sometimes forget that the present day is an American holiday that you normally celebrate.
When you’ve spent the last six months in foreign countries, you start to forget about holidays (except for Thanksgiving and Christmas – believe me, we’re counting down the days).
I’ve looked at each month of this year as “Month 2” or “Month 5” rather than as February or May, which sometimes makes you forget that there are actually holidays on the calendar.
This year, the only things we’ve been good at celebrating are birthdays and Easter.
Coming into this week, we knew the 4th was coming. Waking up this morning, most of us forgot that it was an American holiday until we checked our phones or until somebody mentioned it at breakfast.
So, from half way around the world, where this holiday means nothing, except to the thirty some Americans living in Manila for the month, Happy Independence Day America!
