“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.  And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” – Hebrews 4:12-13

The Bible is good.  That is what I got from the above passage the first 273 times I read it (number extremely exaggerated).  I never truly questioned or understood why reading the Bible was good, why I should consider it such a blessing.  Still, I do not fully understand the significance of the book sitting in front of me now.

Hebrews 4 explains that the Word of God is living and active.  It understands every thought I have and sees what my true intentions are.  How is that possible?  The Bible is a book.  There is no other book that claims to have this ability, because no one is crazy enough to suggest that a book could do this.  Books are stationary, man-made, and do not have a brain for creating thoughts.  No other books have the claim of containing the Words from God, our Father, either.

God knew us before we were born, before our parents were born.  He knew us when deciding what to put in the Bible.  He knew every thought we would have, every struggle we would go through, every thing we might need. God knew the encouragement we would need and what we might need to hear from Him.  Like any good Father would, He left a love letter for our sake.  That’s what it means when it says His Word is living and active.  The Bible was written specifically for me.  Specifically for you.  It has continued to be relevant for thousands of years because it was written with us in mind.  It’s living because our God is.  It’s active because our God is.

How sweet of a Savior we have.  How precious of a book He has left us with.  Why would I not open it up to read every second of every day?  It was written for me.  It was written for you.  It was written for all His children.  He left perfect advice to help us through the trials we are in and encouragement to keep us focused until we get to go home to Him.  I will cling to this book now and forever.  When I begin to question the reasons for going on the World Race, when I become discouraged when support doesn’t come like I expected, and when spiritual warfare becomes real, I can be encouraged that God is not surprised…and He knew all of this when His Word was created.  All I have to do is open it up and trust in Him.
