This month was difficult because we have become accustomed to working with actual ministries that have names and compounds or official names and these ministries have consistent ministries that they do around the community and they allow us to come along side them and join in the work they’re doing.
This month, however, looked NOTHING LIKE THAT. We helped a family take care of their kids. I changed diapers, fed babies, burped babies, bathed babies, cooked meals, cleaned, tutored kids and did night duty shifts in a nursery with 3 babies and a special needs child in it. Some days I worked 12 hours; some days I worked 20 hours. Everyday I was exhausted. And everyday I had to fully rely on the Lord to give me patience, wisdom, kindness, and perserverance.
It took a while, but I finally got to the place where it didn’t matter if the ministry was fair or “real”. And it didn’t matter whether or not our hosts were appreciative or thankful for our hard work. What DID matter was that my team and I let the light and love of Jesus shine through us to EVERYONE on EVERY day, no matter what. It was much easier said than done, my friends. But we did it. It didn’t always look pretty, but we got it done. And in the midst of it all, we found that caring for and loving on the 10 kids in that house was an extremely impactful ministry. Even though the babies will never remember us or how we loved them, we now know what it means to truly love and serve SELFLESSLY.
Being selfless–really, TRULY selfless– is hard, but incredibly worth it. And I’m forever grateful to my month in Honduras for teaching me that lesson.
At the end of month 4, at our debrief, some major changes happened: TEAM CHANGES!!! I’m now on a new team and it’s called Team Alabanza. I cannot wait to tell you more about them and share photos of my new family who I’ll be doing this race with for the next 3 months. Stay tuned!!
