Imagine this: you are eight years old, an age where one should be playing, and having fun. At the age of eight, going to school should be fun, because learning is fun and gets you out of doing house work. Mirishcia who is now 91 years old, didn’t get to play, have fun, or go to school. For Mirishcia, at the age of eight she was sold as a slave.
Sitting in her tiny house, Mirishcia told us that her father sold her as a slave to make money off of her. Michael, our contact, was translating and told us she doesn’t like to talk about her past because it’s a time in her life that she wants to forget. When he said that, my heart sank. I can’t imagine what she went through at such a young age. Romania is known for having sex slaves, and labor slaves; and to think what all has happened to her makes me sick.
Her face brightens up and she says she only had to endure it for eight years, because she got married at the age of 16. She goes onto telling us that she had three children, but one died. To feed her children she had to walk very far to get food, she even told us she went to different countries, I didn’t quite understand that, but I guess in 1936 they really didn’t have much food.
This sweet lady has more energy at age 91 then I feel after a full day’s work at 22. She has such a kind heart and is always feeding us when we come over. When she talks we can’t understand her, yet we can tell that it’s coming from the heart.
Once a slave girl, now she’s a free woman who has a heart full of gold.

A video of "Nana" we call her singing!
