me a servant???
When my senior year
of High School came to an end, I decided to spend one month of my summer serving
at a Young Life camp. This was an unpaid position, which was a big deal because
I needed all the money I could get when I started college in the fall. But, I
was going to go and there was NO stopping me.
I wanted to learn
what it meant to serve. I wanted to understand the meaning that it is better to
give than to receive.
My sister Jen volunteered
to drive my two friends, Lisa and Jackie, and myself. We drove my dad’s little 19** (something)
Honda Accord.
Off we went to
Saranac, New York – the place I accepted Christ into my heart, just exactly a
year ago. I was going because I wanted other kids to experience what I had
experienced. I wanted lives to be dramatically changed like mine was. I wanted
everyone to experience the LOVE of Jesus in their heart like I had.
So I packed up and
went.
It was at Saranac
that I learned the meaning of serving. I learned that we are called to be like
Jesus and if Jesus came to be a servant for us (Mark 10:45), then I needed to
become a servant and I needed to serve those around me. I learned that I needed
to give my body as a living sacrifice and to let my body be holy and pleasing
unto Him (Romans 12:1,2).
Now 10 years later I find
myself on The World Race where I am going to 11 countries in 11 months! Though
the tasks are slightly different, the objective is still the same – serving! Giving of myself so that I can be
more like Christ. Teaching me how to give of myself to my teammates, the people
I encounter on the streets, and the kids that I play with.
When you hear the
words, “you reap what you sow,” (Galatians 6:7) does it make you want to serve
more? Think about it- if we sow things into people the way we want to be
treated it would be, good and fruitful! If you sow good things, then you will
get good things in return. How do you want to be remembered?
A person that sows a
servant’s heart will reap a good harvest. But a person who sows bad things will
get that in return.
What if we were all
like this? What if we put ourselves last and put others before us- can you
imagine how different this world would be?!?!
Every day I pray for
God to give me strength to serve the people I am living with. I pray that He
would speak to my heart and show me ways I can serve my team today. And I want
to encourage you to do the same thing!
So, sow good things!!
