Most of the
ministry that we’ve done since coming to Canaan has been work projects and
helping in the school. Two of the days I was able to go out with some others
and do evangelism. It has been a very rewarding experience.
The first time out we walked up into the mountains, and went
door to door or just met people on the path. Talk about living with nothing.
These people manage to survive on whatever they can grow in the rocky soil
around their tiny one room shack balanced on the side of the mountain. This was
a great mission field though. People are much more receptive to the gospel in
these conditions. In fact we met a lot of Christians. We would stop someone and
ask them if they know Jesus and their face would light up and say yes! Some
would ask us to pray for them right there, some would take us to talk to their
unsaved relatives or friends.
Our second trip was more in town and it was a very different
experience. People’s hearts were harder. Some would say something like “God
isn’t the same here. God is Real in America but not here.” These people were
limiting God to material things. Voodoo has a strong presence here. We actually
talked to a voodoo priest for about an hour. We shared the gospel with him and
he said yes he had heard all that before but he makes money being a priest, so
he wasn’t going to give it up.
Anyway it’s been wicked hot here. It gets to 90 or 95 every
day. Last Saturday. We hiked into the mountains to a spring and went swimming.
It was beautiful up there. The locals had irrigation ditches all over the place
and used the water to grow some amazing crops. It was like a water garden Oasis
up there.
This is me and Samuel on our hike.
This is me and Francisco at the beach.
