This is a letter written in 11th grade english class by me at the age of 17. Our teacher had us write these letters to ourselves so that in 5 years she could mail them to us and we could compare our current life to our expected life. So please read the letter from me at 17 to myself at 22.
The first part is a list of questions we had to answer before we could write the letter.
- As a young adult, what will be the area of your life that will bring you the greatest joy? Becoming a vet will bring me the greatest joy, because of my love for animals. I have wanted to be a vet for as long as I can remember and as of now I am working at Bay Animal Clinic and will become a vet tech this summer. Animals show compassion and kindness to everyone and that is why I have chosen to be a vet. Since I was young I would bring home stray animals, which would make my mom mad, but I would do it anyway. My family would help that stray to find a home that would care for the animal.
- What do you see yourself focusing on when you are 23 years old? Where do you hope to be at that point in life? I see myself focusing on my career in life, which is to be a vet. I hope to be at Auburn Universities Vet School, which I will attend for four years.
- What are your greatest fears about the future? I am scared that I will not live up to my expectations. I am worried that I will not do well in college. I hope that I still have the friends I have now.
- What are your most important plans? List three concrete goals for the next five years. I want to become a vet, keep up with family and friends, and live life to the fullest. These three goals will help me to achieve success and enjoy life while I am doing it.
- How are you going to determine whether you are “successful?” How will you measure success? I will know if I am successful, if I achieve all of the goals I set for myself. I will measure success by my job, family, and enjoyment of life.
- What will you do about it if you find that you don’t like the path you are on? What might be some regrets as you begin the decades of your twenties? I don’t believe that I will not like the path I am on in life, because of my passion. I also believe that God will direct me in the path that I am meant to take, so there will be no regrets.
- How will you know if you are ready to get married? What if marriage is harder than you expected? I will know if I am ready to get married when I find that one woman that God had put in my path. Marriage is hard, but if you love each other enough nothing else matters.
- What will you do if you haven’t found that “significant other?’ Will you be content on your own? I will keep looking because God sets out a “significant other” for every person you just have to keep looking. Hopefully, I will find that other person and if not life will go on.
- Write you definition of happiness? My definition of happiness is to be content with myself and to help others in need.
- What is the best thing about you? The worst? What do you wish to change? That I have the ability to forgive others. I wish I did not get angry. That I would be less stressed and live life to the fullest.
The next part is a letter written to myself:
Dear Mike,
I am going to beat you silly if you are not in vet school. You better be in vet school and on your way to becoming a vet. Make sure that you don’t forget all of your old friends back in Fairhope. Don’t forget the passion of becoming a vet it will help you to become successful. Work had and have fun and don’t forget your goals.
MIKE LINTON 17 YEARS OLD, MAY 14, 2008, 8:50 am.
