I’ve been thinking a lot about what it will look like to live out of a backpack for a year.

Right now, I live in a 3 bedroom apartment with two lovely roommates.  It’s quite nice, we have a big kitchen, a decent sized living space, and we all have our own bathrooms.  Consequently, I have furniture to fill this space.
Table
Couch
Bed
Desk
5 shelving units
so much.

None of that will be in my backpack.  All of the gear I have for next year (with the exception of my 65L backpack, and daypack) fits into a 12×12″ box.

What.

I’m going to go from my stuff filling a 3 bedroom apartment, full of furniture, to gear that fits in a 12×12 box.

I’m like a gold fish.  All people are, really.  Not that gold fish can shrink to the size of their environment, but they certainly grow to it.  As a young nemo fish, the environment they are placed in determines their size.  Fish bowl’s make small fish, while lakes make large fish.  They have the room to grow, so they do.

People do this too.  If there is space, we fill it.  Not just with furniture and trinkets though.  We grow, mature, and develop based on the environment we are in.

The people around you help you grow, or not grow.  Sigma Kappa has been vital towards my personal growth through college, it is after all one of our four main values.

From what I understand about The World Race, the next year will stretch me and help me grow into a big fish.  It’s very exciting, and having met a couple of my squad mates, I can’t help but think about how team time and feedback will stretch me in 2017.

So, here’s to being like nemo adventuring the great unknown looking for my Father, and meeting Dori’s along the way to adopt into my ‘family’, growing to the size of my environment.
