Never in a million years did I ever believe that I would get to use my degree in Biology on the race. Well more like teach a chemistry principle, so maybe I didn’t really use my degree, but still I got to teach science to Vietnamese children!
Last night our host asked if someone would teach music class tomorrow at school. No one chimed in and as a joke I told her I would teach music, but I have no musical talent. So, our host said instead of teaching music I could teach science! How cool!
So today I taught about chemical reactions and how taking Vinegar (an acid) and mixing it with baking soda (a base) would create a chemical reaction. We talked about explosions, the difference between acids and bases, neutralization, and who made science. We took a bottle with some vinegar in it and placed a balloon filled with baking soda over the bottle and allowed the baking soda to drop into the bottle. As the baking soda mixed with the vinegar the balloon blew up and the kids were amazed to see this happen.
I am thankful for the small opportunities like this one to share one of my loves with kids. Everyone deserves to learn about Chemistry at least once in their lifetime!
Much love to you all!
Michelle
