I first saw it when I was sixteen in the eyes of a homeless teenage boy…
Its a certain look that a human has in
his or her eyes. It hard to describe. A mix of hopelessness and
loneliness. The shallow depth of pain and years spent void of
dignity.
It’s haunting.
At best it is severe neglect and at
worst demonic. My opinion its always a mixture. And I’m not naive.
It’s way pass the look of alcohol and drugs.
This week we went back to the abandoned
train station twice. We brought huge sheets of paper to color on,
face paint, games, songs, for the kids. We held babies, attempted conversations and took family pictures. I got to talk to
one of the older men who had lost a leg in a landmine 30 years ago.
He seems open to Jesus and I hope we can have more conversations. This last time there was a new boy.
He had that haunting look in his eyes.
He is an orphan. He digs through trash
each day to find recyclable items to earn just enough money to eat.
He looks around twelve years old. He was obviously high off of glue
when I saw him. Most the street kids are. He’s been taken to
orphanages before and doesn’t stay. Many street kids don’t know how
to live dependently, even if it means shelter and food.
He had a huge cut on the heal of his foot from
digging through trash. It was obviously infected and twice and normal
size. We helped him clean it out with a first aid kid but he needs
medical attention. He wouldn’t let us take him to the doctor. He
wouldn’t let us pray over him (even though we did).
We were able to get him food, some
shoes, change of clothes, and a haircut to help him get rid of lice.
My heart hurts for him. I want to do more. I’m full of hope. I know
my God is big. I know He uses us in big ways…but this isn’t the
only sad story…and its not a story. It’s a human life. A human
soul.
In the mean time I will pray in deep
and true faith for him. We will go back and visit and continue to
bring aid where we can.
Please pray for healing, For us to be
able to get him stable aid, and for God’s hope to be breathed into
his spirit.
“Therefore we do not lose heart.
Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being
renewed day by day…(2 Cor 4:16)
On Him we have set out hope that he
will continue to deliver us, as you help us by your prayers. (2 Cor
1:10b)
