A Week in Recap!

On our day off in Huaraz this past week, me and the girls stumbled upon a little hidden jewel.
This jewel came in the form of delicious hot chocolate to warm us up from the rain, tasty garlic bread, and real REAL Italian food.
We feasted upon lasagna, fettuccine, and pizza!
  It was delightful.
This is me and Mary marveling over our garlic bread.

On Saturday, we were able to view the Peruvian celebration of Palm Sunday (Yes, I realize I typed
Saturday.
They actually celebrate Palm Sunday twice – on Saturday in their town and then for real on Sunday in the bigger cities).
The gist of it – the entire town shows up for a procession and a service in the Catholic Church.
Most of the town is Catholic whether they really know it or
practice it or not.
It was definitely an interesting experience.
Liturgy is one thing … a lifeless church is another thing.
But that’s a WHOLE different topic.
You can read Mallorie’s blog (A Matter of Life & Death) for more about that.

Here is one more shot of the Palm Sunday celebration in the plaza of Tumpa.
  Do note the man selling
ICE CREAM.
  So bizarre.
They basically exited their service, bought ice cream, and then stood around for awhile.
  Interesting.

That same day, the town also had a big soccer tournament in the center of the city.
Initially, we had planned a huge outreach in the plaza and had planned to gather the people down there.
  After quickly realizing that the
ENTIRE town was up at the soccer fields, we let the Lord wreck
our plans and we headed up to join the festivities.
We basically spent the afternoon hanging out with people, playing with kids, and generally –
  just building relationships.
  Good stuff.

This is the
cutest picture of my
cutest little amiga here in Musho.
She yells “Amiga!” every time we see her – and then proceeds to ask us where our house is.
  She is funny.
She is also SEMI-afraid of cars – I was able to experience a minor freak-out one day with her in the street.
And no … I do not know her name.
  She won’t tell us.
  Ha.

This is me and Mallorie with one of our new friends Marilia.
Our work in Tumpa has mainly consisted of meeting the townspeople and sharing love and the gospel with them.
From there, it is our hope that discipleship with take place as the new believers grow in the Lord and as cell groups form.
It is eventually the hope of the believers here that a church will be planted in Tumpa.
Please pray that the Lord will guide this entire process and that the people of Tumpa would truly seek and find the
abundant life that is being offered to them.

Yet another funny story.
This is Edwardo, one of our translators, and Mal
attempting to learn how to plant onions in one of our friend’s fields.
Aide (our friend) was very gracious and patient with us at first as she explained how to plant the onions.
However, this picture was taken about
5 minutes BEFORE being asked to stop because we were doing such a
ridiculous job of it.
We pretty much made her do
double the work because she had to correct everything we did.
  Oops?
We all laughed about it though and joked that we had been fired after only about 10 minutes of attempting to be real farmers.
  We’re a mess.

For one of our team nights this past week, we played a nice,
friendly game of Texas Hold ‘Em.
Don’t worry though – the only thing bet was beans and corn.
  What can we say??
We’re poor missionaries in the mountains of Peru!
Beans and corn was the only thing we could come up with!
This is Edwardo with his only remaining kernel of corn.
He prayed at one point that the Lord would provide for him and multiply his stack …. but needless to say, that didn’t quite happen.
  Fun times.

And finally … the result of hungry friends and one can of peanut butter???
  Clearly … and
empty can of peanut butter.
While I thought that my can might last me longer, it was really fun to share with everyone and to see the utter
joy on their faces upon learning there was something else to eat for dinner other than soup.
  Yikes!!!!

Anyway, hope you enjoyed my recap of the week!
We head up even FARTHER up into the mountains next Monday to a small town called Sacweote.
(No idea how to spell that).
Because of this, I don’t really know when the next internet time will be!
Know that I love you all though and look forward to next time!

“The grace of the Lord Jesus be with you.
My love to all of you in Christ Jesus.”
