A glimpse into the 1st half of our South African Road Trip
Hillcrest
& Durban, South Africa
We
spent about 2½ days total in the area.
Mallorie had a contact through a friend – Pat who is with YWAM – Youth with a Mission – and her son MCZ (that’s not actually his name, just how you pronounce it
J
).
We were able to jump in with her on some ministry and she provided us a place to stay at her base.
We had the opportunity to visit a school and teach in a 4th grade classroom … as well as spend some time with several of the elderly women (GoGos) in the community who take care of some of the orphans there.
We love Pat and MZC!
Thank you for being such a blessing.
Here’s the video …..
PART ONE
Mkambati Nature Reserve
Our initial “simple detour” ended up being practically a day trip in itself.
What looks like one small gray line on the map turned out to be a dirt road into the middle of nowhere.
But that middle of nowhere ended up being absolutely
beautiful.
After the fiasco of getting our mini-van stuck in the dirt, we spent the night in a cute cottage (made for 2, we fit 6) and spent the next morning exploring.
The wildlife was actually in “the wild” too!
No guides, no fences.
Zebras, baboons, wildebeests, eland … we even spotted several whales right off the coast!
Crazy.
We ended up driving right up to the huge lagoon that you see here … the falls going right into the ocean.
Stunning.
East London
, South Africa
After a LONG day of driving, we arrived in East London after dark … with no place to stay.
We prayed, and then ventured out.
yikes.
We had seen several hotels on the map, as well as several churches, so we decided to check out both.
We ended up dropping off Kim and Eric at the first church we passed – Quigney Baptist Church.
They ended up having to wait until their choir practice let out but then a nice man named Mark basically gave us to the keys to the house next door!
Wahoo … free lodging.
We spent the night and then headed out on the road again …..
And that’s about it so far.
Oh yeah ….
one more thing.
Did I mention that we also jumped off the
highest bungee jump in the world?!?
Ahhhhh!
Crazy!
Check out the video!
PART TWO
And that
really is all I have for now.
The funny thing is that his continent is WAY bigger than we anticipated …. HA!
Who knew Africa was big?
But we are safe and having fun … and surprisingly NOT sick of the long hours in the car ….. yet.

Stay tuned for more adventures/misadventures!
