September 18th, 2010 Day 6

We are leaving Monday morning for International Care Ministries. This particular ministry does a lot of community development. We, along with one other team, is working with them this month. I’m excited because we get to travel to another island! our flight leaves Monday morning at 8 am, which means we have to leave where we are staying at around 4am! 4am here is 2pm MST on Sunday. So while ya’ll are enjoying your Sunday afternoon lunches, say a pray for our team 🙂
I’m excited to finally get to our contact. We’ve been here in Manila for this last week and though I’ve enjoyed it, it’s felt a bit like training camp. Now, this isn’t a bad thing. We’ve learned things here that we’ve needed to. I’m just ready to get out there!! I’m not sure how much internet access we’ll have out on the island. We’re told that there are certain places not to swim because “there are scary things in the water.” lol We are also told that we should have electricity but not much else beyond that. That leads me to think that running water may not be in the cards for this month of ministry. We have been very blessed this week to have running water, showers, and indoor toilets! The hardest thing to remember about indoor toilets–you can’t flush the toilet paper!

I’ve been trying to get some pictures posted but our internet here where we are now is a bit finicky. Any time more than five people are on the internet, you get the boot.

This week has been interesting and I’m still trying to process a lot of things that I’ve seen and done. We have been staying smack dab in the middle of the slums. Poverty is around every corner. Yet there is a spirit about these people. You walk down the streets and see a little boy standing there with no underpants on…waving and smiling 🙂 There are street vendors around every corner selling food or novelty items. This is their way of life and they don’t seem to be all that upset about it. Trash litters the street but you keep walking and notice people with their brooms sweeping off the tiny walkway between their shack and the next. What brings these people joy? Do they know the joy that I know? Do they know of a Savior that can bring them everlasting joy? Sadly, I won’t be in this neighborhood long enough to find out. There are other teams staying here though and they will have the opportunity. Soon I will get to spend time on the other island to maybe find some of these answers. Please continue to pray from my team. Pray that we will work together and become unified. Pray that we learn to trust each other and can be open about anything conflict that arises (because there will be!) You can’t live in close community with 6 other people and not face conflict. Pray that I will be able to handle it well. I hate conflict and will often avoid it if it will make the situation go away. You should be happy to know that I have done really really well during launch week with this issue though!!

Here’s a quick update on support: I currently have $8,861.54 in my support account. I received an email earlier today stating that I need to have $10,000 in my account by December 13th. That is 3 months from now. What do I need? I need 9 people who would be willing to commit to $50 sometime between now and December 13th. (Would make a great Christmas present *wink*wink* This would reach my December goal! As always, THANK YOU to any and all who have sent in support.

Sending much love from the Philippines!
