‘Are you coming to chapel’ I shouted. I saw *Steve struggling to find his way. He had just been dropped off on campus and was disoriented. Steve is blind, but very independent. He makes his way around campus just fine. But not today. Today, he was turned around and just needed some help. I hesitated because the person who dropped him off was sitting in the car giving him verbal direction. But it just was not getting the job done. I paused for a moment wondering whether or not it would make him feel disabled and incapable if I tried to ‘take’ him instead of letting him ‘find’ his own way………what would I want someone to do for me??? So…. I put my arm on his shoulder and guided him where he wantied to go.
After chapel, while walking back to the office alone, I was struck by the overwhelming revelation that I am blind too! We all are! I need someone to guide me. I get so confused and turned around by the voices in my mind that are trying to get me where I want to go. It’s only the gentle leading of the Lord and His hand upon my back that will get me there. When I become obstinate and want to be independent, or when the human spirit inside me rises up and says…..’I got this’…..….I find myself only more lost…or worse yet….flat on my face! Its only when I acknowledge my blindness and gladly accept the leading of the Lord that I will make my way through this life on both feet.
How comfortable are you with your blindness in this life? Do you realize that there are many things around you that you fail to truly see? Are you listening for the voice of the Lord? Can you feel His leading in your life…and do you follow Him? Lord, Help us to acknowledge our blindness and our need for You! So often we choose to stumble our way through life instead of turning to You for direction. As we run the race You have marked out for us, would You help us to allow Your Spirit to rise up in us instead of our own sinful nature. Give us eyes to really see!
I pray this for you too: We need to hear clearly from You Lord as we prepare for The Race you have for us. You formed us and You know us. More importantly, You know those around us and know exactly what they need to hear and see. Let us a vessel of Your glory. We invite you to have full access to guide our lives. Your thoughts are greater than our thoughts, Your ways are higher than ours! Lead us through so we am exactly where we need to be to be used by You. Let us feel and respond to Your gentle hand re-directing of our day.
