So on the Race you learn a lot of new things and also learn how to adapt everywhere you go. Here are a few things we’ve adapted to:
Sleeping in cockroach infested busses
Running out of gas
Sleeping on any mode of transportation
Seeing how long you can go without washing your hair
Taking bets on when you will actually leave
Seeing who has movies that you can trade with
Becoming immune to cockroaches crawling by you
Double taking to see if it is a mosquito, fly, or cockroach
Going to sleep at 8 pm and waking up at 6 am
Sleeping on floors
Asking your teammates where a common verse is found because you can’t find it
Having mosquito killing contests
Cold showers
Getting stared at like we are the new popular show on the T.V.
Living out of packing cubes
Having a “Doxy” time when everyone takes their malaria meds
The one electrical outlet in the room is overflowing with chargers
Searching for wifi like it’s your job
Everyone squishing in the mode of transportation because there is no room
Preparing a sermon with 15 minutes notice
Teaching a class on the spot
Sharing a word of encouragement every week
Getting excited when you find an actual grocery store
Packing a lunch everyday
Eating basic foods like apples, eggs, and peanut butter over and over again
Having powdered coffee every morning
Not leaving at the time you were told you’d leave the night before
Taking an average of an hour and a half to get home
Making up songs and skits while you’re performing them
Crying from laughing because most people think we’re absolutely crazy and no one understands what it’s like to live life on the race unless you’ve done it
The race changes people. It creates a lot of new normals, it also shows you how some things just don’t matter.
