Hungry in Hungary
wife from South Korea, who was called years earlier to serve and minister to
the homeless of Budapest, Hungary. I stood behind the table and slapped some
rice into a bowl in which I would pass to my team mate Liz who would fill the
same bowl with soup and then it would be handed out to fill an empty stomach.
Granted very few spoke any English at all, but it didn’t stop the looks on
their faces from communicating the thankfulness, which resided in their hearts.
During the time of serving I would glance over to my right
and there was a homeless man who was eating his soup and he kept saying
something in Hungarian but reading his face he was expressing his thankfulness.
After we had cleaned up and were ready to call it a night, the same man came
over to me and started talking again in Hungarian. I communicated by pointing
up to the sky, trying to say don’t thank me, thank Him (God) who provided this
meal and the message previously given by Pastor Kim. What happened next was really unexplainable, he started
telling me a story, and even though I don’t speak Hungarian I understood
everything he was saying. If you want the long version just let me know but the
short story is this, He said I know I’m in a bad situation but God has always
taken care of me, some of these people here come for the free food and pretend
to listen to the message but I have God in my heart, He’s always there talking
to me, taking care of me.
All in all, it was a humbling day for me, and also a pretty
amazing day to be able to understand this man’s story and I didn’t even speak
the language blew me away. It’s almost like the spirit of God in both of us was
communicating and my heart was touched by this man’s sincerity and his outlook
on his current situation, not having a home, food, a family, but knowing God was
always there with him and was taking care of him.
