Yesterday started like I thought most would. We worshiped as a group, and then we all helped run a kids camp in the morning. The camp is all about empowering kids ages 4-11 with the love of Christ. We played games, we sang songs, we did puppet shows, crafts, dodge ball (yea, its legal for kids here :-P) and even watched a few movie clips to drive home how unique and beautiful they all are. All of this was done in about two hours. Seeing the pure joy on their faces over something as small and simple as a beach ball was really refreshing. They just played and laughed and had a great time. Lucky for them (and me) we all get to do it through Friday.
Once that was over, we had about an hour and a half for lunch and to recharge. Then we came together at the church to figure out what we would be doing next. Visiting elderly? Street evangelism? More work with kids? Nope. We were going to be cleaning the toilets of all the local businesses. You read that right….we were going to be cleaning toilets. Alright, who can I sign up for the World Race?! So we got our supplies which included: 3 sponges, a bucket of water/cleaner, and rubber gloves. With our supplies in hand we walked out to the center of town and our contact gave us our designated streets and off we went. Heading into the first building we felt completely ridiculous, but willing nonetheless. We got more than one “no thanks” and even a few “we can’t for security reasons” but eventually we got a few to say “sure”! Each accompanied by a strange look. Imagine how you would feel if three people walked into your business, not looking to buy anything, but asking to clean your toilet free of charge. You’d look at them as if they were completely out of their minds too! While confused though, some still let us and asked us why we were doing what we were doing. We were able to tell them that we just wanted to show a sample of God’s love to the community with this small, seemingly insignificant act. We were able to share our stories as well. It turned out really cool.
The act of cleaning a toilet has a humbling effect on a person. If you haven’t done it yet, I recommend it. We were able to bless a few of Ireland’s people, even if it just saved them from having to do a duty (pun completely intended) that they wouldn’t want to do anyways. They’ll remember this act when they see their friends and families in the future. Maybe they will be encouraged to do something for someone else just to brighten their day. If not, oh well, there was no loss in it. I have faith that God will use this random, weird act to minister to His people. It definitely
isn’t how I saw my day going at the start, but I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
God, thank you for providing us with this simple opportunity to reach out and show your love to the people of Ireland. Grant us humbleness, that no one should think himself any higher thank his brother or sister. Thank you Lord. Amen.
