I want to tell you a devastating story about a seach for “love,” and a cure to the emptiness burning within.

So many feet, walking in every direction, heads mounted as if on a swivel, eyes telescoping, searching…

There is a desire that dwells within each of us, a desire to be loved.

He’s recently divorced, and his kids blame him.

Her family needed the money, so she took a job with the promise of glamor.

He’s searching for someone to ease his pain and make him feel loved the way his wife used to.

She’s searching for the wealthy Westerner who will whisk her away to her idea of a promise land.

It almost seems like destiny

His hands are shaking, nervous. He’s only ever been with his wife; but the pain is overwhelming, and he can’t stand the loneliness anymore.

He has to go through with it. Doesn’t he?

She steps up on to the bar for the first time. The music is playing. Her thoughts racing. Her boss is yelling at her “Dance!” She grabs the pole…

She has to dance. Doesn’t she?

He’s walking, he has to stop. The lights are so bright, bar signs flashing. “Women” grabbing him, herding him into their bars. He’s surrounded. Lonely.

She’s dancing, she has to stop. The lights are so bright, cameras flashing. “Men” pawing at her. She’s prey, and they want to devour her. She’s surrounded. Lonely.

How empty it must be to feel all alone surrounded by a crowd of people.

His eyes lift. “Freedom Bar.” He walks in. Eyes busy. So much going on, he doesn’t know where to look. He orders a drink. He needs courage.

She’s dancing, faster and faster, trying to end the song. Eyes busy. So much going on, she doesn’t know where to look. She’s overwhelmed.

Their eyes meet. Empty.

He reaches for his wallet. She grabs his hand…

Overwhelmed and in too deep.

Every night at around 7:30pm the lights on Bangla Road turn on, and the bar doors open. The “women” show up to work. The “men” stop at ATM’s to fill their wallets. This is an unacceptable reality in Thailand.

Every night at around 7:30pm I sit down alongside twenty other Jesus-loving world-changers to worship. Then we head to Bangla Road. We pray. We buy roses. We have conversations. We treat everyone we meet like people. We share a glimpse of the outrageous grace and love of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

God wants to change the world through you, but you have to answer the call. We have to combine prayer with action.

How will you be His hands and feet?
