When I walked into the Orphanage in Puerto Barrios, I felt darkness, but in the darkness there was light and his name was Julius Caesar (aka Julio).
Julio is 10 years old and has lived in the orphanage for 9 years, he has Cerebral Palsy AND Autism.
When I first saw Julio He was tied to a wheelchair in the corner of the orphanage. I knew instantly that this was who God wanted me to spend my time with while I was there because I was given an overwhelming love for him.
A love that broke my heart.
I was not alone in that love. I had Nikki, Cara, and Becca to share it with, and our hearts were broken together.
As we came back time and time again, there is one time specifically that stands out to me. As we walked in the orphanage I noticed Julio as always tied up in the corner, but this time he was soaking wet. You see there was a heavy rain the night before and the roof had leaked and soaked him. He had also been sitting in his own waste, and as the thought crept into my head that he had been like that all night broke me. As I looked at Him I had to fight the urge to untie him and clean him up.
At this particular orphanage the children are left all alone at night. The workers pack up at 6:00 and go home to their families for the night. So the children are left to fend for themselves. Most of the time the workers are left unpaid, so they take what little food is donated to the orphanage to feed their own families. As you can see this is a terrible situation.
Here is the Change
As we went back Julio started to change. His smile lit up the room, and He laughed. He laughed a laugh that would make your heart melt, It brought warmth to the entire orphanage.
We would always read him Scripture that we felt God was telling us to share. That Scripture was Psalm 46. As I read this to him, he was calm, he sat and listened. And as I read verse 10 his face lit up and he smiled so huge.
“Be still, and know that I am God;
I will be exalted among the nations,
I will be exalted in the earth.”
It was at that point that I knew that God had blessed with being able to understand what we were saying to him.
I know that Julio will one day live out Psalm 46:10
Julio will one day walk flatfooted, he will run, he will play futbol, and he will share with the world what God has done for him. He will bring God to the nations.
We have seen it!
He will bring the Kingdom!
