Capetown, Month Two.

If ever there could be two opposites, my month one vs. my month two on the World Race would be striking candidates.  In Zambia, there was barely a green tree in sight, much less a vast ocean amidst breathtaking mountains with valleys full of flowers. I can honestly say I have never seen a more beautiful place in the world than on the winding roadsides of Cape Town, South Africa. The first month, we struggled for water; this past month, I was overcome by it. I even saw whales. WHALES. Just out there in the ocean, flopping around. I have never been so impressed with God’s creation.

We stayed in a small Western suburb of Cape Town, near Bellville. Among the beauty and creation that is apart of the culture, so are the drugs, or more specifically, “tuk”- also known as Meth. It has infested the community, and so many of the people are affected and trapped by this addiction. We teamed up with TEAM DEGAL and worked with the ministry New Hope Jeremiah Project. It is organized and completely funded by God’s grace and two people by the name of Ma and Pa Haynes. They work with the local neighborhood children and give the community food through their weekly feedings. Every afternoon, there are dozens of children that flock to their small pink house at the end of the cul-de-sac. Most of the children live in government housing or are financially assisted by the government. The ministry with the kids includes weekly Bible studies, a competitive dance team, door to door evangelism, and of course, playing football. Kids ranging from 4 years all the way up to high school spend their afternoons here. Our two teams were able to sit back, relax, and just spend time with them. Our contacts constantly blessed us with cookouts, trips to the ocean, and fish fish fish! We were able to minister to the children every single day, learn about their lives, and pray for them by name. We prayed over the sick in the community, and saw God work in their hearts and bodies. We saw where the Indian Ocean met the Atlantic, where mountains met the sky, where God met Earth. It can change a person’s life. We were so blessed.

By the end of the month, we had formed wonderful relationships with the people of Cape Town and were able to see so many examples of God’s creation right there in front of our faces. I will always remember the greeting the kids gave us the day we arrived…

“Welcome to Cape Town,
Let’s see you smiling,
Put on your dancing shoes,
Cape Town welcomes you!”

It is hard to believe that month two is already over, but the team is excited to be in our third month in Swaziland and continue the race loving on the people of the world. Thank you for those who have been praying for our team. God has blessed us beyond what we ever thought possible.
