Greetings from Africa! I’m officially in month 4 of my race. I cannot explain to you how crazy that still seems to me. After spending the last 3 months in Central America, I was hoping for a drastic change when landing in Africa. What I found was a place that looks a lot like home. We drove through South Africa to get to our ministry site in Maseru, Lesotho and while riding in a bus, I leaned over to Audrey (squad leader and fellow Texan) and said that if I didn’t know better I would have sworn we were in Texas.  Looking out the window, I saw various mountain hills, and plateaus that I would swear there was a canyon right beyond the ridge. We drove past farmlands as far as the eye could see, complete with pastures full of cattle. I didn’t expect for Lesotho, Africa to make me so homesick.

I’m super excited for ministry this month. I am living at and working with an organization called Seeds of Love. They provide a home for abused, neglected, and HIV/AIDS affected children. There are 28 children living on site ages 2-16. I must say, these children have stolen my heart. I am growing so much here already, and I have these children to thank for that.

Here are 10 Things I’ve learned from these kids…

  1. Cheap sunglasses make for great fun!
  2. Cajone ministry is a thing! Also, Cabelo can teach me some new beats.
  3. A portable speaker and Church Clap can lead to a 2 hour dance party.

  4. Anytime is the right time for a photo shoot.
  5. Picking up ants and chasing me with them counts as fun. At least I’m getting my cardio in.
  6.  Sesotho is much harder to learn than Spanish. They have sounds in their language that we don’t have in English, but they are very patient in teaching us.
  7. Selfies are a great way to make new friends!
  8. Piggy-back rides are still cool.
  9. A hug really can make it all better.
  10. My heart has the ability to love far deeper than I thought.

I only have a little over 2 weeks left with these kids. 11 months is 11 different goodbyes, and I know this will be one of the hardest goodbyes I’ve had to say yet. These kids are absolutely amazing and I pray they know how loved they truly are. I pray we are able to give them as much as they are giving to us.
