The Unsung Hero can be a mysterious creature at times. It does not wildly display itself in a festive array the way a group of gringas might on a city bus in a foreign country. (Guilty)
This particular species is so true to its name, it's unsungness, that it can be difficult to even encounter one at all. They are not in the city square being heralded for their work; they aren't on the mouths of people far and wide. Their work is quiet and if you turn your head at the wrong time, you might miss them entirely.
So we're forced to look for the hero in the people that we rub shoulders with. We're forced to look deeper, imploring the hearts and the work of everyday folks. We're having to use our binoculars.
When we waltzed into Loyalty School on Wednesday morning, I wasn't thinking about heroes. I was thinking about how I was going to manage teaching a 3rd grade classroom anything about spelling… in English. So I missed the heroes. I didn't notice the sacrifice when the principal took the time out of his busy day to help me conjugate verbs in Spanish. It's easy to get wrapped up in whatever I'm doing that I forget that I'm sitting across the table from life changers. Community builders. World turner-upside-downers.
It's been frustrating to feel like I'm not finding anyone but it's a reminder for me to ask God to open up my eyes to see what gets hidden behind the every day comings and goings. If you think of it, please pray for our team as we continue to organize meetings, get in contact with people, and try to spread the word.
The quest continues to find the elusive heroes. They're out there; it's just a matter of seeing them.
