Here is a belated lessons learned from our month in Bulgaria:

  • There is nothing I can do to make God love me more or less.  Nothing.
  • Nonverbal communication is very important. If you don’t believe me, try giving a sermon in a culture where shaking your head left to right means yes and nodding up and down means no.
  • If you’re 20 kilometers from Greece, go. It’s worth it! 🙂
  • God is good at providing housing and ministry if you ask him.
  • The Sofia public transportation system is amazingly difficult…until you get an updated map.
  • Don’t stress. Everything works out in the end.
  • Sleeping in 8 different beds in 30 days is draining.
  • Learning about a new country, specifically meeting with people just to ask them questions, can be fun.
  • Bulgaria is beautiful – one of Europe’s best kept secrets.
  • Starbucks abroad is like Starbucks at home…and that makes my heart happy!!
  • Putting paint the consistency of water on a ceiling is messy.
  • Skype is a wonderful gift.
  • If you ask God to break and change you, he will.  Brace yourself.

I have been in southern Israel now for two weeks teaching English to Sudanese refugees.  Tomorrow, my team will head to northern Israel to live in a Bedouin village, in community with a family there.  Because being a Christian here in Israel is frowned upon, I will likely not be posting very much about my time here.  I would hate to jeopardize the important work our contact is doing here for the refugees and Bedouin people!  However, I do hope to have some stories for you next month! Please continue to pray for the safety of me and my squad.
