Growing up, my favorite day of the school year (besides the first day and the last day) were field trip days!!! Those were the days that no matter how sick I might have been…I was going to school!! Field trips were rare but always involved a stop at the mall's food court, a bus ride full of laughs, lots of talking and we were allowed to bring our walkmans (yep I just showed my age)!! Nine times out of ten the destination was always somewhere fun…train trip, zoo, police station, Carolina Panther stadium, Cherokee, etc.
One of my favorite cartoons growing up was The Magic School Bus. I used to pray and imagine what it would be like to go on just ONE field trip with Ms Frizzle. My teachers and our field trips were boring and uninteresting compared to traveling in space, or into the human body, or down into a volcano.
One of the cool things about God is, that He is faithful and doesn't ever forget the prayers we pray. I had forgotten about that silly childhood prayer until I was driving home tonight, and He reminded me of it. At first I laughed at how silly it seemed from an innocent child's heart. But, He knew my heart then and He knows it now and He is about to answer my field trip prayer in a way far beyond my imagination.
Permission slip was signed when I surrendered my life to Him, and said, "Lord, send me….to the broken hearted. To the people who long to hear of a hope and love that the God of the universe offers. Break my heart for what breaks Yours." I'm pretty sure that my Heavenly Father smiled as He proudly signed His name next time mine as Parental/Guardian.
This trip is longer than any of Ms Frizzle's trips, its 11 months and completely covers the world. The coolest part about God being the driver of this bus…He created EVERYTHING, and EVERYONE I am about to come in contact with. He doesn't need a map or GPS to get around, He knows the land, knows where the traffic is gonna be, knows where the challenges will be, and knows where the joyous moments will be. But this trip isn't just a geographic trip to show us His creation. We are going DEEP! He is going to show us His heart, and then we are going to experience transformations that only come through knowing Him personally. He is going to use the orphans of Africa, the street boys in Asia, and the homeless in Central America to show us who He is, and where His heart is.
In one week I will embark on the field trip of a lifetime, with my Daddy as my personal chaperone and tour director. I am packed and as ready as I can be even though I know He has more preparation in store for me. So what about you? Have you ever dreamed of going on a field trip with God?
