Hey friends! So my team and I have been living in Hyderabad, India for about three weeks now. It’s been so good to experience a new culture and experience a new group of people that the Lord loves so dearly.
Here are some random India things that I want to share with you:
- The people of India are beautiful.
- The clothes that they wear are also beautiful.
- Tuk tuks, or autos, are cute little three-wheeled wonders that take us from point A to point B – Ubers do that sometimes too.
- Here, we eat with our hands. More specifically, our right hand.
- Taking shoes off before you enter someone’s house is a very good thing. Do that.
- In India, traffic lanes are basically non-existent. People be bobbin’ and weavin’ all over the place.
- Sarees are beautiful and kind of fun to wear (key words: kind of). We can’t put them on without Auntie’s help though (she’s Indian and fantastic).
- Indian engagement ceremonies are interesting, but fun. Fun fact: the woman isn’t supposed to look at the man very much at all during the ceremony. Otherwise it looks like she’s “coming on too strong.”
- In movie theaters, they play the national anthem before the movie starts. There is also an intermission in the middle of the movie, which comes out of nowhere, but is actually convenient if you have to use the rest room. If you don’t, it’s about 15 minutes of waiting as strange Indian commercials play.
- Bartering for autos is a must unless you want to be charged nearly double what you should be.
- Street food is yummy, unless it’s watermelon with salt and pepper on it. Then it’s not so yummy.
- Chai is delicious. And so are the biscuits that go with it.
- Saying chai tea is going to get you secretly laughed at. ‘Chai’ in Hindi means ‘tea,’ so saying ‘chai tea’ literally means ‘tea tea.’
- In the winter, aka right now, it’s normally about 85°F. It doesn’t get any colder than that.
- In the summer, it’s 120°F on a good day. AH. I’m thankful that we’re here in the winter.
- Rice and curry are staple foods here. My mouth is slowly getting use to the spiciness that is India. But today’s dinner nearly burned my face off.
- Kurtas (basically long Indian shirts) and sarees are the norm for women to wear here.
- I forgot how comfortable leggings are. Since they are culturally appropriate here, I wear them every day.
- Just a fun thing for people at home: India is 11.5 hours ahead.
Thanks for reading. Love you lots. God bless.
Megan
