Yep, exactly what you think. Kentucky Fried Chicken. The restaurant.
They say home is where your heart is. Or maybe it’s your pillow… Either way, mine is right here at KFC in a city in Indonesia.
This month I’ve joined a team of five amazing women, The Voyaging Daughters, and I get to walk with them through the first month of their World Race. What an honor! Our first month together in Indonesia is ATL, which stands for, ‘Ask The Lord.’ This means that this month they have no ‘assigned’ ministry or location but will go wherever God calls, live wherever God provides, and serve however he opens a door for us to serve.
Yeah, it’s pretty broad. But thankfully we serve a pretty broad God.
We spent the first few days at a hostel praying and talking about what God is calling us to this month. We felt God telling us to simply go and trust he would provide connections for a place to stay and somewhere to serve this month. Through a few different circumstances, the name of a specific city kept coming up so this morning we hopped on a train and arrived just a couple hours later.
As we stepped off the train, we saw signs for a KFC just across the street. With hopes of finding a bathroom, a bite to eat, and a place to set down our big packs while we got our bearings in this new city, we set out for the KFC. And have stayed.
See, we don’t actually have a place to go after this. Not yet anyway. We’re still asking God. We decided to divide and conquer. Three of us went out to walk around the city to see what divine appointments could be found, trusting that God has people for us to meet, a ministry for us to join, and a place for us to sleep tonight. That left the other three of us to stay at the KFC with all our luggage and intercede for those following God around the city.
So here I wait. In my temporary home. Clueless, but full of faith for what God will provide. He’s done it before, he’ll do it again.
I share this not to make us sound unwise or to scare you (parents, grandparents, don’t worry!! We have local phones, a budget, Google Translate – no problem!). I share this to emphasize the great and mighty power of God to pull something out of nothing, to provide us a home where we are foreigners, to bring complete peace in uncertainty. He called us to a step of faith, to just show up, and trust he would take care of the rest.
So, right now, I can’t tell you the cool God-story of how things ended up because we’re still in it. But I know that story will come soon. Hang tight. He’s got a plan. For now, it’s KFC. So, we’ll just Keep Faith Coming.
