Today we live in a world that is completely dominated by social media. Before I say anything else, I want to emphasize that I am a true supporter of social media and use it on a daily basis. There are a lot of wonderful things that come out of it, but it has had some negative impacts on our society.

One of which is the satisfaction people get out of liking and sharing information regarding multiple causes. It can be so satisfying that most people actually feel as though they have accomplished something after simply branding their name to it and sharing it. Don’t get me wrong, awareness is important and we should be sharing stories that affect us with others, however, the sad reality is that research has shown that people who share and “like” causes on Facebook are actually less likely to volunteer or donate their money towards it.

At first I found this to be completely fascinating, but after looking at my own online activity, I can only admit that I am guilty of it just like everyone else. The scary part is, that even I feel as though I have done something special and noteworthy after hitting the share button or tweeting about an organization.

Here’s a video that I feel completely sums this idea up well:

Simply liking something or sharing it is promotes AWARENESS, which is important. Sometimes that’s honestly all we can do. However, if we truly care about these issues, our actions need to show it. That’s why I believe that if we truly care about a cause, we should be doing something to support it. Find ways to volunteer, donate your money, or even pray about it! This probably means picking just one cause that really resonates with you out of many.

I don’t know about you guys, but I really don’t want to be known as the generation that really supported social justice through “liking” it on Facebook. I want to be known as the generation that took it a step further and put our beliefs into action. This looks different for everyone.

For me, at this time in my life, it means going on this mission trip and meeting people where they are at. I want to promote community development, encourage the locals, give people a platform to share their stories, and simply just be the hands and feet of Jesus. It’s a huge sacrifice, but I do it because I believe the bigger sacrifice would be to do nothing.

If you would like to help me accomplish this, please partner with me in prayer and/or financial support. Also, don’t forget to subscribe to my website to get more updates on my journey with The World Race. I would greatly appreciate it!
