I used to think bravery looked like William Wallace staring down the English armies or King Leonidas showing no fear against the vast ocean of Persians that stood before him. I thought bravery was something done in a moment of great intensity. The dramatic moment that all the bass lines build up for in epic movies. That is when we have to choose to be brave.
But lately I’ve been realizing that bravery looks so much bigger than that. It isn’t confined to exciting instances. Sometimes being brave is just doing something you’d rather not, just cause it’s right. It is sacrificing something for someone else’s benefit. An act of bravery is to abandon your pride and sit next to an unpopular kid at school. It takes courage to follow God’s call to start a business, even if the success of it is unsure. Bravery can happen in the most mundane of situations.
People keep telling me how brave I am to be going on the World Race. But my moment of bravery isn’t going to be stepping on the plane to travel to all the different countries. It wasn’t even in the moment I clicked ‘submit’ on my application. It is going to be every moment that I’m there and I don’t step on a plane home. It will be the courage to do what God calls me to, even as simple as smiling at someone down the street. Because the reality is we are all called to be brave. Even here in the States, I need to step out of my comfort zone and do the simple things that make a difference.
So how are you being called to be brave?
It is an act of bravery to lay down one’s finances and give them over to God. But if you feel like God is calling you to give towards my mission, then I encourage you to be brave and answer that call.
