There are many sights and sounds in Haiti that I experienced while there and even thought it was a month ago I still thought I would compile a list of just a few and post it. If you want a top ten list you can also visit my teammates blog by clicking here…..
Sights
- You see people showering on the side of the road, because that is where the well of clean water is.
- You see buildings destroyed and collapsed.

- You see tents and tent cities everywhere
- You see men peeing on the wall of a store building
- you see dogs peeing on the coke bottles that have yet to be purchased
- you see trash everywhere

- you see woman and men carrying their business and/or purchases on their heads. Today I saw a woman carrying a huge block of ice on the top of her head….she was AMAZING!
- You see people EVERYWHERE – streets and markets are FULL
- You see tap taps with Jesus’ name on them

- You see offerings to saints and idols
- You see mosquiots (and feel them) everywhere! Especially under out dinner table.
- You see our one of a kind cage of transportation…it felt like we were in the circus sometimes driving around Haiti on display for the people π

- You see ants ALL over! You learn to check your food before you eat it to see how many ants will be your protein π
- You see mountains everywhere! Thank you Lord for that gift this month!

- You see beauty in the children’s faces all around you….and you fall in love with them. (this is one of our beautiful girls at Foyer Renmen)

- You see a rain storm that takes out your tent and a teammates tent.
- You see the compound flooded after a storm
- But most of all you see and feel sweat dripping from you at ALL times! π
Sounds
- You hear honking ALL the time, this is their turn signal on the side roads and their ‘get out of my way, I’m coming through and you can’t stop me’ signal. π
- You are serenaded by drums as you go to sleep by our neighbor.
- You hear a night club bumpin that feels like it’s next door, but is really a mile or two away
- You hear chickens ALL night long
- You hear dogs singing or yelping to each other all night long
- You hear children laughing, playing, screaming, and singing.
- When on the roof you hear your name shouted by a few children that run and hide when you turn to look.
- You hear “megan megan” all day long followed by smiles and waves, hugs, or a jump ready to climb on you like a jungle gym.
- You hear laughter and playing all day long.
- You hear shouts of joy when the swimming pool is full and 50 children are swimming all around
- And you hear God’s children cry out to their God for love, mercy, and life in the most beautiful way I have ever heard!
Really there were SO many aspects of Haiti that we were able to see. We saw pain and struggle, but we also saw hope and life. We saw dirt and destruction but we also saw beauty and amazing landscape. Haiti has so many facets and we just got a taste of it. I hope you enjoyed a few pics….pictures of this month in Moldova are to come as well….
