As I sit here typing, I am watching the Hope for Haiti Now
program on television. The stories and pictures continue to break my heart. The
images burn in my mind and I can’t begin to fathom what the people are
experiencing right now in this moment. The devastation seems like it will never
end. The hurt, the pain, and the loss, it will continue and it will be felt for
years. This earthquake and devastation are a part of Haiti’s history. As I
watch the show a Haitian group is singing and the lyrics they are repeating
are:
“the soul
of the Haitian people will never break.”
Their soul won’t break and even in the devastation they are
not breaking. The stories of people being saved after being trapped for 8 days,
husbands, fathers, mothers, standing and fighting to find their children for
days, people living against all odds. Their souls are strong, they are fighting!
Their strength and resiliency challenges me. How will I respond to their
defining history? In August I will be in Haiti living and serving those in
need. Until then I still feel the need to respond so I will give all that I can
and I will pray with all that I am. They are in need now…..
this moment define YOUR history?
