This past month God has been teaching me what a huge impact I can have on a child’s life. I formed some incredible relationships with the children at El Auydante. I got really close to one young man named Kevin. Kevin became like a little brother to me this past month. Everyday we would play soccer together, listen to music, and just enjoy each others company. Kevin is 16 years old and his dream is to become an air force pilot. He loves playing soccer and listening to music. Kevin is the oldest boy at El Auydante, so all the kids look up to him. He is a great leader. At first Kevin may seem like he is just this “cool kid”, but when he breaks down his walls he has a heart of gold. It was incredibly hard to say goodbye to Kevin because he had become like a little brother to me.
Kevin and I kicked a soccer ball back and forth knowing we only had 30 minutes before we had to say goodbye. Tears forms in both of our eyes as we talked about this past month and all the great memories we shared. Kevin had grown to trust me and shared things with me not many other people knew. His vulnerability allowed me to encourage him in his walk with Christ, telling him that Jesus was always going to be with him no matter what happened. The amazing thing is I was able to form this incredible relationship with Kevin despite the language barrier. I don’t speak fluent Spanish and Kevin doesn’t speak fluent English, but we made it work using hand motions and Spanglish! God transcends all things including language. I am so blessed to have a little brother in Christ in Nicaragua. I am so excited to see where God takes Kevin! I know God has huge things in store for him!
Here is the letter Kevin wrote me:
Dear Megan,
Thank you for your friendship. I will miss you. I wish you never had to leave. Say hello to your family. I enjoyed hanging out with you because you are caring, joyful and fun.
Heavenly father take care of Megan. I care about her very much. Pour blessing on her and her family.
Your friend,
Kevin
Never underestimate what God can do through you because we will use you in ways you can never ask or imagine. I never thought God would use me to form this incredible relationship with a teenage boy, but God is full of surprises!
