Our culture, our society, is plagued by insecurity. Even more so, we are plagued by all of the things we think we can find security in.
If we just had enough money, we wouldn’t have to worry about having our needs taken care of.
If we could just find someone to love, and start a family, we would never have to worry about being lonely.
If we just found the right job, the right path in life, we would never have to worry about feeling unfulfilled.
We are constantly preoccupied with how not to worry about xyz. And we are constantly filling up our lives with false security blankets.
Jeremiah 49:4-5 reads:
“Why do you boast of your valleys,
boast of your valleys so fruitful?
O unfaithful daughter,
you trust in your riches and say,
‘Who will attack me?’
I will bring terror on you
from all those around you.”
Terrifying. When it comes down to it, most of us struggle with putting all of our trust in the Lord, and divvy up our trust among various earthly things. In reality, we cannot trust anything of this earth. It is all fleeting, it is all ridiculously unsubstantial in the grand scheme of things. Anything can be taken away at any moment. It such a simple concept, and we talk about idolatry in the church all the time. But we still do it. We still idolize our security blankets. We still seek out new security blankets. We can’t be secure enough while depending on anything less than infinite.
So why is it so hard? I think it’s a lack of faith. We can see and feel money, relationships, careers, etc. We are so bound by the human condition, and so trained by too often having our needs immediately met, that we have trouble putting all our eggs in one, unseeable, infinite basket.
My prayers is that as I prepare myself for a year in full time ministry, the Lord would teach me and give me the confidence and faith to put all of my eggs in one basket. To rely on him solely and to remove reliance on everything else.
