Our travel day to Guatemala was a pretty easy one. We had a 3 hour flight and a 4 hour bus ride into the mountains. We were able to stop at a restaurant about an hour into the ride and have a wonderful authentic Guatemalan meal. As we continued our drive I could feel my attitude changing. I was getting restless and a little annoyed of being stuck sitting so long (even though it's not long compared to travel days to come).
With about 40 minutes left to drive we hit a traffic jam. Traffic wasn't moving and there is no other safe way into town. We soon found out that part of the road had been washed away. Shoot! that means we are going to be here for a while! luckily we were able to get out and stretch our legs. Some people did some stretches. Some just walked between the vans we were riding in.
Pretty soon we heard singing coming from a church (the initials spelled C.O.P.S.) We decided to check it out and walked over. There was someone at the door greeting people and they were excited to see us. people brought out more plastic chairs when they saw us come in. They were so welcoming. Some people were brought in to see the children in the children's area. They also let us use their bathroom the entire time we were stuck in traffic (which I was very thankful for). The woman who was singing just sang from her heart, they weren't words to a song. She sang what they were feeling, which really hit me when I found out that 5 people had died when the road was washed away.
Standing in that church, I felt silly for being annoyed or upset. This is an amazing adventure and I'm not going to let something small ruin my attitude. This little church didn't have much, but everything they had they were willing to give. That's what I want to be. That is my goal.
