Laying in bed and it’s just a little too hot to sleep dangling my feet over the edge to try to feel a little bit of the breeze from the fan, i feel like it is actually sinking in. I am on the World Race. This is real life. After just over a month out here on the race here are some things I have learned to be new norms for my life on the race so far.

  • watching a roach run across the bathroom floor without flinching
  • not always having running water
  • hammocks are always an acceptable way to lounge and sometimes make a decent bed
  • sweating all day everyday
  • my feet and legs are covered in bug bites and a layer of dirt all the time
  • riding in the back of trucks is totally acceptable and truck beds are usually full of people
  • sitting 4/5 people to a seat meant for 3 and fitting 24+ people in a micro-bus (van) meant for 15 people
  • taxi drivers will stop to give you a ride if they already have people in their car
  • stop signs are optional and some traffic lights can be too
  • can’t flush toilet paper down the toilet. that’s what the trashcan in the corner is for
  • being called gringa and it’s not a bad thing
