Colombia is a place where each of the senses is reached and experienced. What some could consider as sensory overload, my senses have been awakened to embrace each new one with appreciation. The city of Medellin is full of music and worship in every corner of the town. There’s the melodic tune of the guitar strumming into the night from the first floor of our compound. The sound of the piano plucking as the worship team prepares for church. The sounds of the whistling breeze as it comes rushing off the mountains. The rain pounding against the tin rooftop becomes the lullaby that sings you to sleep. Then, there’s the sweet aroma of baked breads and pastries that creep into the hallway, as the bakery prepares it’s 3:30 morning routine. The sight of the sun setting over the mountains, begins a new beauty as the city lights illuminate the streets below the terrace. The food…bursting with flavors of cilantro, silky butter, and freshly squeezed juices. The taste of boldness through each sip of coffee.
The architecture that is exploding with vibrancy, richness, and history. The cold showers that refreshingly awaken the new day. The sweet laughter of a young girl who waves and says Hola over and over to us as we pass by in the Botanical Gardens. The embrace of a hug from a woman who is overjoyed of the healing that was prayed over her body. The gentle grip of a child’s hand in yours as you become friends and walk around the village together. The pure light of Jesus that can be seen radiating through a woman, Sarah’s eyes as she shares with you the worth that God has spoken over her. The vibration of music echoing off the rooftop as we have a Squad worship night. My senses have been overwhelmed with gratefulness for small things that make this country beautiful.
As I sit here writing this in a cute little cafe, I remain in awe of this week. I love the simple and gentle reminders that God is in all of it. He is in the sights and sounds that I encountered this week. He is in the laughter and joy that overflows from this community. He is each of these senses that left the sweetest of memories. He is present in this city.
