So this blog was supposed to be posted a month ago…well a lot has happened since then. I want to get back to my thoughts in the shower. Yes. I'm going back to the shower…come with me. Settle down, it was meant to be a joke, but not really.
I like the idea of a series of blogs on my shower thoughts because I think people really can relate to it simply because it's one of the few places we are alone. And this is coming from someone that really doesn't like things in series. The shower is a place where we can just be. Where we can don't have an agenda and can let things "wash over us" more or less (sorry for the pun, but not really). I was in Guatemala about a month ago leading an high school Ambassador trip and had some good meanderings in the shower.
Here are some of my thoughts from my showers in Guatemala (in no particular order):
- First and foremost, DO NOT touch the shower head (see picture). Don't even think about raising your hands without looking up first
- Still thinking about the shower head and how the wires attached to it have SHOCKED me several times before (no water heater tank, it's all in the shower head)
- Playing the army shower game (turn water on, get body wet, turn water off, suds up, wash off) has my mind way too focused on the games of showers in other countries
- In my thoughts about being blessed with hot water
- Trying to be thankful for the cold water that I have for the majority of my shower
- I actually time myself sometimes and see how fast I can shower (3.5 minutes is my record)
- Speaking of rules of the game…don't even think about opening your mouth at any point during the shower. Period. You don't know what's in the water
- Continually praying over my high schoolers, for light in a dark place, family, friends, safety…
I want to hear what happens in YOUR shower (it's not weird…promise)? Where does your mind go? I don't think this is something we should try to evade. Think about it. It's one of the few places you can be by yourself…just you and your thoughts. You can be you in front of you. Something few people have seriously accomplished.
The truth is though, we need to take whoever that person is inside the shower and show them to the world. Showing the vulnerable, real person that has a true identity. Because at our core, we want to know what our identity lies in and who we really are.
So challenge yourself. Keep a shower journal. See how God speaks to you during that time about yourself. I think you'll be surprised to see what the Lord will say. Trust me, it's probably as weird as you think it is, but you'll never look at showers that same way again.
