One of my favorite things to do is to empower people.  I think it might be the ‘teacher guy’ that’s lurking under the surface of who I am.  God has engrained in me this absolute joy when I see a person come alive, when I see a person wake up into a new reality of not only knowing who they are, but what they’re able to do.

Just thinking about it makes me feel alive

And this is one of my roles as a missionary, one of the things that I’m doing while serving God in the World Race program.  Part of my role is to hunt down the future World Racers, teach them (empower them), follow them on their journey throughout the year, and continue to plug them into various ministries that harbor growth and make them come alive.

It’s really the perfect thing for an “empowerer”.

Carly Farver is on the October 2008 squad, which is currently in the heart of Africa.  Throughout her journey she’s been awakened to two dreams.  The first is to shed off her old self, the false self, the person that the world says she is.  The second dream is this (in her own words):

I want each country we enter to be my home forever; to immerse myself in the community as if my life and ministry there is permanent and lasting, because I hope to leave something permanent and lasting.

Here in Tanzania, as we live in a village (suburb) of Dar Es Salaam, my home looks like helping the woman gather the water in the morning from across the street, it’s playing peek-a-boo with the children or is fond in doing my own dishes.  In this area which is 95% Islamic and has sent 400 soldiers to Iraq to fight the US our pastor says we are changing the way people think about Americans, in a good way, just by being here (and wearing a long skirt).  It’s true, I like preaching and teaching English, and doing the things we’re doing.  But I love walking through the market to buy vegetables, or sitting with a Bebe (grandma) as she and I and my team pray in the Spirit for God to fill her life and her heart, to heal her grandchild of malaria.

I’m not on a holier-then-thou mission.  I’m not even on a mission.  I’m just doing life.  And yes, my life looks a little unique at times (rafting the Nile anyone?).  However, the Race is not the beginning or the end of anything, its just part of the whole adventure… (read more here)
