Definition of subvert |səbˈvərt|
• to undermine the power and authority of [an established system or institution]
We go in. Smiles and waves and bashful eye contact. We greet: name age
country. They greet: name nickname age. Hopefully in English. If not
well then that’s what we’re here for. Head shoulders knees and toes.
Knees and toes. Simon says touch your ears. Simon says touch your
mouth.
Simon says teaching English is a chore.
But…
The art of subversion lies not in the outright and obvious method, but
in the use of the simple, of the everyday, and in its use thus
effecting change. The art of subversion is just that…an art. It is
beautiful, it is creative, it provokes and evokes our common humanity,
and sometimes it disturbs and disquiets. It can draw your admiration
while at the same time setting your teeth on edge.
So what of it? What’s the point?
available to us…the artists, if you will. The simple act of teaching
and the everyday relationship built between instructor and student
lends itself well, if I may be so bold, to subversion.
His kingdom is not of this world …yet.
However, His will should be done here and now …on earth as it is in heaven.
We must remember, His law is love and His gospel is peace.
