I am constantly amazed with the generosity of Pastor Manuel,
his family, and the community as a whole. If I take away nothing from the World
Race other than what I have learned about unselfishness from these beautiful Mayans
in La Cama, that will be enough…indeed, it will take a lifetime to truly learn
to live in the same spirit as they live. They moved everything out of their
house for us, they constantly check to make sure we are healthy and have food,
his wife cooks every meal for us, they have taken us to see the market at
Chichicastanango and the huge lake at Panajachel, and they put up with us dumb
americans with what seems like an unlimited wellspring of patience. And this is
only the first few days. Then a few nights ago – a few of the ladies from the
community came with their kids, and they and Pastor Manuel’s family presented
us with beautiful warm blankets on behalf of the church, for us to borrow since
we have been so cold. It was unbelievable; I was simply astounded that they
were doing this for us. Many of the blankets are beautiful looking and I have
no idea where they came from, but there is a good chance some people are not
sleeping as warmly tonight as usual. They just give and give and give and I
cannot comprehend it. They have so little in the way of material things, but
they give like they have a king’s coffers.

I guess though, in  a
way, they do.

They have The King’s treasure.
