Meet Simeon Njoroge…

He’s a farmer.  He loves to work the land, plant seeds, and harvest a crop after taking care of God’s creation.  I met Simeon a few weeks back and after talking to him for a couple minutes I knew he was someone God had put in my path.

Last year I ran across an article about seeds that could be used to reduce the bacterial content of dirty water and purify it.  It sounded interesting but I didn’t think too much about.  Then, a few months ago I came across another article talking about a “Miracle Tree” whose leaves have one of the richest sources of essential nutrients often lacking in people's diets.  It took me a little while, but I soon realized these two articles where talking about the same plant.  It’s called Moringa and it grows great in almost all of the most malnutritioned countries in the world.

I wanted to figure out how to grow it here in Kenya so I did some research and it seemed simple enough.  There were only two issues.  One…the plant doesn’t do well at higher elevations and we’re right on the upper limit of that here in the Rift Valley.  Two…I didn’t have any seeds.  So we searched everywhere for them, but ran into a lot of dead ends and ended up with no leads.

That is until I met a “random” at dinner one night.  I don’t remember why, but I had gone to a place to eat that I didn’t frequent much anymore.  There were a couple guys there eating and after a few minutes we started talking and after about an hour of talking I found out that he does a ton of work with Moringa.  I picked his brain and got his contact info and a few days later I had a bag of seeds in my hand.

Now…back to Simeon.  As soon as I met him I knew he was the one to plant Moringa with.  I asked if he was interested and he got very excited so a couple weeks ago we planted some Moringa together and now we are seeing how it will do.  It’s already germinated and is starting to grow slowly.  We’re praying that this tree will do well here so that it can be used to help with the nutritional needs in the area and for a plethora of other uses!
