Hey folks, I am currently in San Raymundo! My team and I arrived two weeks ago and things are amazing here, just let me tell you. Our ministry host is an extremely generous woman who has been a missionary in Guatemala for thirty-seven years. Her wisdom and experiences put her on the same level as Yoda, Gandalf, and Albus Dumbledore. But seriously though, Lori is so cool and her husband Keno is quite the comic. Lori and Keno have been winning hearts to Jesus, being the hands and feet of Christ, and loving people for almost four decades now.
My team and I are currently volunteering at Morning Glory Christian Academy. Teaching bible class has been a hoot, and the little buggers are adorable. During recess I hear the phrases, “Mateo empujame (Matt push me), Mateo vueltas (Matt swing me), Mateo cargame (Matt carry me), Mateo venga (Matt come),” about a hundred times. The older kids love to play us in basketball, let’s put it this way, Guatemalans are much better at soccer. It has been super cool developing relationships with these kids and I’m so excited to keep building on those relationships. Morning Glory does so much great stuff for the San Ray community, and it’s so sweet to be a part of what they’re doing.
This past Sunday, my team was returning to the same church we had gone to last week, not as congregation members, but as worship leaders. Keno is the pastor of a church just outside of San Ray and he requested that we lead a few worship songs two hours before the service started. Now my team is no Hillsong United, Bethel Music, or Elevation Worship, but we do have a guitar player, a drummer, and five mediocre singers. Nonetheless, we gave it our all and it was a blast. Steffany Gretzinger, Kari Jobe, David Crowder, and Chris Tomlin would have been proud of us.
