“Call me double sushi, thought I was too raw.” -Lecrae

Sometimes I get caught up in trying to be a Christian Rockstar (term keyed by my friend, Melissa Lowell).

I want to be recognized for being awesome.

“Look at all the Christian-y things I do.”

The problem with that is I’m seeking the acceptance and praise of other people. My number one love language is words of affirmation, so when people tell me I’m doing a good job or that I'm funny, I get this weird kinda high.

All of my life, I’ve been the attention seeker.

It’s never been in a desperate, flashy clothes and promiscuous kinda way.

It’s been in a class clown, funny, annoying, and good works kinda way.

“Hey everyone, come and see how good I look!” -Anchorman

I know God is calling me out my Christian Rockstar mode and into a more Christian alternative, dare I say hipster mode.

I can’t be center stage.

The lights can’t shine on me.

People can’t cheer my name.

1 Peter doesn’t say,

Mary, you should use whatever gifts you have to serve yourself. If you speak, speak whatever you want. If you serve, do it on your own strength, so everyone can tell you how awesome you are. To you Mary, be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Ha. Ha. No.

“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.”

1 Peter 4:10&11

I know this is time for me to change because it’s been spoken over me, by two people within the past couple weeks,

“God is proud of you. You are enough.”

How’s that for a word of affirmation?

Are you trying too hard to be a Christian Rockstar?

Well, let me be one to tell you.

Cut it out.

It’s exhausting.

You will work so hard to impress people, and it’ll get you no where.

If you’re over the trying to impress people thing, and onto the trying to impress God thing, incase you didn’t know…

“Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding, no one can fathom.” Isaiah 40:28

Think about it.

Trying to impress the Creator and Sustainer of all things?

Hows about you join me and get off the stage, and let the big guy do his thing.

So, WR teammates, if you ever see me try to be a Christian Rockstar, can you please give me a swift kick in the pants? (You pray about whether it should be literal or figurative)

So here is it, my declaration over my life. It’s purpose is to bring glory to God, for ever and ever. Amen.

“…All people are like grass, and their faithfulness is like the flowers of the field. The grass withers and the flowers fall, because the breath of the Lord blows on them. Surely the people are grass. The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” Isaiah 40:6-8
