My sweet, smart nephew Mason is 6 years old but oh what wisdom far beyond his years he has! As you may have guessed, it is time for me to tell another one of my lessons I learned from Mason. He’s such a wonderful little teacher!
Early last month I was at his little sister’s birthday party (She’s such a precious little Kar Bear!) when Mason taught me a very applicable lesson about fellowship and loving one another. It constantly amazes me what a huge heart that little fella has for others. He’s going to do such big things as he gets older!
Mason has a little friend named Eli who was attending the party. When Eli arrived Mason was super excited and ran off to go see him. (Pretty sure they’re besties for the resties — just sayin’.) We can all identify with the excitement of learning someone we enjoy being around has just arrived to see us.
A few minutes later as I made my way back into the entry area, Mason found me. There was another little boy with him, running around. They stopped when they came to me and Mason said, “Mary!” He says it in the cutest way — yes, allow me to be the proud aunt for a moment. I said, “There you are! Who is this?” Mason introduced Eli and I quickly and with sweet little smile he often blesses all of us with.
Then, Mas pointed from himself to me and said “Friend-Friend!”, from himself to Eli and said “Friend-Friend!”, and then…..from Eli to me saying, “Friend-Friend!” Just like that, Eli and I were declared friends. Because Eli and I both are Mason’s friends, he expected us to along and be friends, too. Because he loves each of us and we love him, he expects us to love one another.
You see, I think the body of believers should be like that. Since each of us called a child of God are also called His friend, we are to be friends to one another, loving one another and living together in fellowship. Since we love God and He certainly loves us, we are expected to love one another.
What a great biblical lesson in brotherly love to be taught by a just-now 6 year old!
(Though I like to believe Mason may just be some kind of theological genius!)
Sidenote: Today is Mason’s 6th birthday! I love him. Smother him with prayers of a great year, growing up to love and follow Jesus, and more fun and purpose yet to come!
I will be traveling with a whole community of people that I don’t really know all that well. Yet. (I mean, yes I know them, but not all of them…and not on that deep level that comes with doing life with one another.) We are all in the same family (the family of God), and I will love them as brothers and sisters. Also, if Jesus calls them friends, why shouldn’t I? My goal is to be as inclusive as Mason, loving with brotherly love.
“Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.” – 1 John 3:7
