The World Race is an incredible opportunity. If you are reading this, chances are you already know that fact.
The World Race, however, does come at a cost.
As a Racer, we each have to give some things up.
In light of Giving Tuesday, I want to share 11 things I am giving up for the World Race.
Here goes (in no particular order):
1. My dreams.
I traded in my law school dreams for God’s calling to do overseas missions in 11 countries in 11 months.
2. My relationship.
I am leaving my boyfriend for 11 months to go and spread the Gospel. (Side note: He’s fully supportive, though!)
3. Western plumbing.
Don’t laugh, but it’s a struggle for me to accept that clean, hot showers, toilets, and sinks with running water will not be readily available for me in daily life for 2015.
4. Control.
On the Race, I can’t fill up my phone calendar with appointments and events and expect everything to go as planned. Things change and being flexible is of utmost importance on the World Race.
5. My sisters.
I have never went more than 4 months without seeing both of my sisters, and that was when Shana was in graduate school. Leaving them for almost an entire year is more of a sacrifice than I can describe.
6. Technology Availability.
I am accustomed to being able to call, text, email, Facebook message, etc. whenever I need to — via phone or computer, WiFi or data. This may not seem like a big deal, but I know it will — at times — make me feel disconnected.
7. My new baby nephew.
Roo (Riley Evan) will only be 5 months old when I leave for the Race. I have gotten to watch him change since birth, so giving up seeing his first birthday, his first steps, first words, etc. is a huge deal for me.
8. Privacy.
On the Race we have, essentially, no privacy. The name of the game is “close community” — not “personal space.”
9. Security.
This goes for food, safety, financial, emotional — all of it. Nothing is guaranteed.
10. My grandparents.
I have been living with my grandparents the last year as I prepare for the Race, and I adore them. Not seeing them for almost an entire year and missing out on so much time with them is something I do not take lightly.
11. Comfort.
A bed with a mattress, a fully stocked fridge, all house appliances, my car, a full closet and dresser, the ability to go to the store and have a myriad of things to choose from to purchase, knowing the customs of those around me, understanding the main language spoken, etc. — all of that will be staying in America when I head overseas in less than 5 weeks.
The Race does not come without cost, without sacrifice.
But…
I know that all great acts of love require equally great acts of sacrifice — and I love the God who has called me to this Race.
I also love the people He is sending me to.
To all of those who have helped this ministry be possible: thank-you for your love and your sacrifice!
“Offer sacrifices in righteousness and trust in the Lord.”-Psalm 4:5
