I don’t have any decorations in my apartment.
The only thing that resembles decoration or has a little personality is a lone magnet that is on my refrigerator.
It says: “She packed up her potential and all she had learned,
grabbed a cute pair of shoes and headed out to change a few things.”
The magnet was a gift from my church’s Ladies Connection prayer
group. This amazing group of women hosted a welcome home brunch for me
back in July, when I was fresh off the foreign mission field, and gave
me the magnet as a reminder of who God made me to be.
I had no idea it’d become a symbol of hope six months later, in my cold Georgia apartment.
As I was working from home today (because of Georgia’s crazy blizzard
of 2011 that’s trapped us for three days), across my Facebook feed came
an update from my old workplace, the San Antonio Express-News.
Right by the article was a picture of the building.
I looked around at my workspace and laughed. This is where I’ve worked from the past three days.
How did this happen?
It doesn’t seem like it’s a step up in the real job world. I’m
working from a mattress (that isn’t even mine), on the floor of an empty
apartment, while raising my own salary.
But the thing is–it is.
While I get uncomfortable (read: have to swallow my pride) about
asking for support, I also get to see God provide in amazing ways.
While I work from a mattress on the floor, I also get to tell the stories of the forgotten, the unloved and the hurting.
While I have only a bed and a rented apartment to my name, I also get
to share the stories of hope that Adventures in Missions participants
experience on the field.
I know firsthand what Jesus can do in a person’s life. I know
firsthand the change that comes when you see what he does in people’s
lives across the world. And it’s my dream to see others, you included,
experience these things as well.
As I looked closer at the magnet on the fridge today, I noticed something I hadn’t paid much attention to before.
In smaller type I read the following words: “Her heart glowed with a degree of happy assurance.”
Yes. Yes it does.
