On the 11th we flew in to Israel. For the past 3 weeks, in.tent.city and Bamboo Brigade have been living at Living Bread, a non-government organization and church in the heart of Jerusalem. We have been participating and leading worship services for a couple of hours every morning. It has been so refreshing to sit in an open-door church and sing at the top of lungs, read through Scripture and pray out loud with visitors from so many different nations…right here in the Holy Land!!

Our very first morning at the church, fellow volunteers took the time to take us on a brief tour through the Old City Jerusalem. We walked mainly through the Jewish and Moslem quarters. For 3 months the staff at Living Bread have been praying and waiting for God to deliver a large shipment of rice that would feed refugees in Jerusalem and Jericho. The rice was sitting in the port and taking a long time to come through customs. During our wait, the teams have been to the Wailing Wall, toured the Old City and worshiped in the Garden Tomb. Just the other day we used our day off to enjoy the beach at the Dead Sea.

Finally, the big day arrived! 26,000 lbs of rice came in about 800 heavy boxes by truck. A forklift wasn’t able to transport the boxes from the truck to the storage/garage so we had to unload them by hand. Our 12 racers and several volunteers and the staff at Living Bread worked together to move the boxes in just a few hours.   We were really sore and beat up and worn out, but to be the hands and arms of carrying in the rice was a miracle in progress. God has provided for the refugees here in Israel!
One of the women here at Living Bread has been leading adult and children’s Bible studies in the city of Jericho. Damaris and I were asked to join her for a couple of days to stay in the city and work with her there. We met some amazing people and it was great to hear how God was working among the people in this historic city. God is showing me that He really knows how to work outside the box I put him in. He is bringing truth and revelation to people in the desert and His name is being glorified.

So what’s next?…

Thursday, the squad reunites and begin our journey to Africa. We will be taking buses for probably 15 hours to Cairo, Egypt! We will be in Cairo for 1 ½ to 2 days and then taking an overnight flight on Halloween (aisle trick-or-treating anyone? Hmm…wonder if costumes are in order…?) to Johannesburg in south Africa. From there we head to SWAZILAND. That’s a lot of travelling in just a few days. Please pray for safety and the energy to enjoy the journey. I know my team and I are especially anxious to work in Africa…we’re pumped and ready to go! Let’s Race!
