Ever since he had spoken, Tim Tebow, was the butt of many jokes for the rest of the conference. The best one was when they pulled a random girl for their improv sing off. Before they started, the moderator asked what she thought of Tebow. He then broke into an improv parody. (think in song) “He’d be a good, good father. Yes he would, yes he would…” (go back to normal talking voice) “I’m sorry I just destroyed the church’s anthem.” Everyone in the building erupted with laughter, my sister and I died.

I never really liked that song, too much repetition; it STARTS with the first two lines being repeated. Now it has been ruined for life! I CANNOT hear it without having to restrain my laughter. I also can’t look at my team if I hear those words in the same sentence. Like I said I never liked the song, anyhow, so it’s no great loss.

Ever since that song came out it has played everywhere, to the point that people don’t even think about the words and what it is saying. I’m not saying it should die all together, maybe just put it in a nursing home for a while.

Christians tend to be like that. We find a new song, quote, verse, you name it, and it becomes our life anthem. We hang onto it and suck it dry till we get sick of it and toss it away. Often in the tossing we throw everything, including all the good. It loses its power because it’s over used. What started out as “the best thing in the world” fizzles out because we stopped looking around us to find replenishment. Rather we found something we liked and stopped there.

It’s fine if we hold onto something, especially if it has gotten us through a hard spot in life, or is connected to a favorite moment/memory. However, we tend to forget that there are new things to experience and new memories to make. There will be other hard times we need to get through and if what we’re hanging onto is worn out and dried it will not get us through. His mercies are new every morning; if they weren’t we’d be in trouble.

Don’t be afraid to try new things; to learn new songs and sing them, instead of wearing out the old ones to the point that you never want to hear them again (and even though you may sound like a fool in the process).

Get a favorite (fill in the blank) but remember that there is so much more out there and if we get hung up on one thing we will miss out on an amazing life.

P.S. Yes this is a bit of a rant. There are just a few songs in my life that I can’t stand due to them being worn to a frazzle. It’s a shame, really, because some of them were actually good. However, due to overuse they died an untimely death and have settled in the archives of my mind (the part that is only opened in an unpleasant moment when that particular song is played)
